ARCENEAUX SCHOOL PICNIC
Crowley Signal June 3, 1899

On last Saturday, Miss Nellie Cunningham, teacher of the Arceneaux School, 
gave a picnic in the woods near the school. Some two hundred parents and 
children spent the day in the woods and had a jolly, good time. About 10:30 
o’clock on a platform that had been erected for that purpose, the curtain rose 
on the commencement exercises. The exercises opened by “Dixie,” sung by 
the whole class.  Then came many recitations by boys and girls. This was 
followed by the centennial address by Douglas Siley, of Plaquemine Brulee. 
Miss Kate Hunter’s new dialogue, “Playing School,” was the next thing that 
caught the audience; this was played by five boys and five girls. The program 
closed by singing America. This has been one of the most successful 
sessions of this school for many years.

At noon a sumptuous feast was spread for all.  The menu was composed of 
everything. The most convincing point of evidence was that when the time 
came to go home none seemed anxious to do so.  The parents were loud in 
their praise to Miss Nellie, and expressed a wish that she might be returned 
the coming season.
