BAND OF YOUNG REGULATORS
Crowley Signal May 31, 1899

A band of youthful regulators was out Tuesday night.  There were about 
twenty of them ranging in age from nine to sixteen years.  It was impossible to 
get any particulars from them concerning it for they are closed mouthed as 
they could be and it was only by putting remarks of different ones together 
that anything like a connected story could be gotten.

It seems that negro boy cursed and otherwise offered indignities to one of the 
young regulators.  This continued for some time, and after consulting with a 
number of his youthful friends it was decided that the nig needed 
punishment.  With this idea in view the young regulators got together last 
night and went in search of the offending darkie.  After looking for some time 
they located him back of the Lake Charles Implement Co.’s store.  They 
rushed in on him and while some held him the others administered a severe 
whipping.  The negro showed fight and picked up an iron rod with which be 
struck one of the young regulators in the eye, and there is danger of the latter losing his sight.

The boys are all members of good families and went about their work with 
dispatch and in a business like way that will probably stop the abuse on the 
part of the young negro.
