MURDER, SUICIDE JURY’S VERDICT
August 23, 1944

Remy Lavergne, 41 year old Church Point garage employee, shot and killed 
Mrs. Beulah Wright Sattler about 3:30 Wednesday morning, and then turned 
the weapon on himself, inflicting wounds which proved fatal a few minutes 
later.

A Coroner’s jury, empanelled by Dr. Z.J. Francez reported this verdict 
following an investigation of the twin deaths. The incident occurred at 
the home of Mrs. Sattler, it was announced by officials.

Dr. Francez, Sheriff Walter Larcade and Deputy Joe Nugent who investigated 
the deaths said the murder suicide were a culmination of an argument between 
the principals which had begun early Tuesday night.

Coroner Francez empanelled a jury composed of Deputy Nugent, Lou Wimberley, 
Walter Thomson, Bertrand Clavier and a Mr. Boudreaux, which after hearing 
the facts in the case, termed the deaths murder and suicide.

Lavergne’s son who is in the army, but home on furlough was also threatened 
by the father, Deputy Nugent related, when he tried to dissuade his father 
from firing the weapon or giving assistance to the woman. Lavergne then fired 
the two shots into his body. He was in the Sattler residence, the son outside.

A Smith & Wesson .38 caliber revolver, borrowed Tuesday night by Lavergne 
was used in the murder suicide. Lavergne was a widower.  He was an employee 
of the McBride garage at Church Point.
