NECROLOGY.

MRS. MARY A. CUNNINGHAM.
Special to the Picayune.

RAYNE, La., March 9. - Mrs. A. Cunningham died here yesterday evening at 5:30, 
after an illness of only four days' duration. Wednesday morning when she awoke 
it was found that she had a severe case of pneumonia, and from the first it was 
feared that it would be fatal. The best of medical sciene (sic) availed nothing 
and she passed away quietly yesterday.

Mrs. Cunningham was born in Conecuh County, Ala., Aug., 20, 1838. She was for 
several years a resident of New Orleans, La., and moved to Scott, La., during 
the Civil War. In 1880 she, with her husband, Dr. Cunningham, moved to Rayne 
and were probably the first to build a residence in the town. Her husband died 
soon after and for twenty years she has been the leading woman in the 
community. She was a consistent member of the Methodist Church and always 
abounded in charitable deeds. She has benefited the community in various ways 
by public donations to city buildings, schools and churches, both white and 
colored. Being such a pious and public-spirited citizen, she will be sadly 
missed by the entire town.

Mrs. Cunningham leaves six children and and (sic) an aged mother to mourn her 
loss. Her mother, "Grandma" Robinson, is an octogenarian. Her children are Mrs. 
W. C. Chevis and Mrs. Powers, of New Orleans; Mrs. R. Holt, jr., (sic) and Miss 
Nellie Cunningham, of Rayne, and Dr. Robert and Marvin Cunningham. All are an 
honor to the noble mother that gave them to her country.

The remains will be buried in the Protestant cemetery this afternoon.
