Oscar Litton Hilliard, age 22 years, an employee of the American Express Company, was found dead in a stable on 15th street, used for the company's teams and wagons, one of which Mr. Hilliard had gone to take out at about 5 o'clock this morning. His body was discovered around 7 o'clock by L. I. Gauthier, another employee of the company, when he came to take out another wagon. Dr. Z. J. Franques, coroner, was summoned to the scene, declared that death was due to electrocution from a defective switch. The thumb and two fingers of Mr. Hilliard's right hand were charred from the contact with the switch from which he received the fatal shock, as he turned on the lights. Ordinarily the house lighting voltage of 110 volts is not sufficient to produce death, but under certain conditions, fatal results have been known. In this case the floor of the barn was damp, while the shoes of the victim were muddy and wet, these things making exceptionally dangerous conditions for electrical accidents. The body was removed to Toler's undertaking establishment immediately, where it was met by Chief of Police Ben Bailey, Express Agent M. Solomon of Rayne, and others who came over from the neighboring town upon news of the accident. Oscar Litton Hilliard was the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Hiliard (sic) of Rayne, and a nephew of Tom Hilliard of this city. He had been employed by the local office of the Express Company about a month prior to which time he had been connected with the Rayne office under Mr. Solomon. Besides his father and mother and other relatives, deceased is survived by four brothers, Arthur, who is a twin brother, Tom, Blakely and Dallas, and two sisters, Carrie and Welty, all of whom live in Rayne. - Crowley Signal. Funeral services were held at the family residence Friday morning at 9 o'clock, Rev. F. M. Freeman of Crowley officiating. Internment in Protestant cemetery. Tribune extends its sympathy to the bereaved family. - Rayne Tribune. A number of our older citizens will remember the Hiliard (sic) family who for several years made their home near Perry. Mr. Ed. Hilliard, grandfather of the deceased, who died a few years ago, was one of the best known and highly respected men of his community and had a large number of steadfast friends in this section.
