All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ************************************************ This old family cemetery (the earliest burial appears to be Reddin Turner - d. 12/10/1875) is situated between Turner and Palestine Roads on a narrow country lane (Ben Turner Road) in rural Allen Parish. (The community name shows as "Tenmile" on some old maps.) On the property there are: the cemetery, with a hurricane fence; the church (built in 1933), and the new church hall. Although regular church services are no longer scheduled there, the church/hall are used for wakes, funerals, reunions of various kinds, gospel "singings" and the annual Memorial Service, which includes the cemetery association business meeting, a church service, remembrances of deceased family members and a feast of barbeque and "covered dish" foods. The Memorial Service is held the first Saturday of August each year, with the business meeting starting at 10:00 a.m. The actual memorial church servicefollows the business meeting, and the dinner follows the church service. Each year an ancestor is memorialized through stories/memories of their children, grandchildren, cousins and friends. Donations for the upkeep of the cemetery, including memorial gifts, may be mailed to: TURNER CEMETERY ASSOCIATION c/o Mary Ann Turner 1736 Gravel Pit Road Pitkin, LA 70656 DIRECTIONS TO THE TURNER CEMETERY: Oberlin, LA (parish seat of Allen Parish) lies at the intersection of LA Hwy 26 (between Jennings and DeRidder) and US Hwy 165 (between Alexandria/Oakdale and Lake Charles).
