Fairview High School, Class of 1942 Memorabilia, Allen Parish, Louisiana Submitted by Sheila Parker Conque ************************************************ Copyright. All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ************************************************ Last Will and Testament Presented by Calvin Hamilton Contrary to all precedents, the class of Fairview High School has decided to make public its own will before retiring from active life. We do not wish you to anticipate grief, but think there will be much less of it when you know that we quite cheerfully, or at least philosophically, heard the learned doctor say that on June 8, 1942, at 8:30 o'clock, the class must die. As this is the inevitable lot of all classes, we have made fitting preparations, executing for the consolation of friends the following will: State of Louisiana Parish of Allen On today, that is to say, the eighth day of June in the year 1942, we, the class of Fairview High School, in good and sound mind being, make our testament in the manner that followeth hereafter: First, that the president be the sole executor, and no bonds exacted. In the beginning, we bequeath our good-will and loyalty to the school, only stipulating that they conduct the funeral services with due form, and have the procession of the correct length, embracing every particular relating to style and decorum. Also, we bequeath to the junior class the honor of being Seniors, the vast responsibilities, the front seats rightfully belonging to us, which they and some of the faculty seemed determined to take when we could not contest for them. Also, a copy of the original some of which two Juniors may have heard for the sentimental effects expressed therein will never fail to cheer as they "Roam, Sweetly Roam." Also, to Miss Boyd, the instructor, we bequeath this advice: teach the pupils to look up, not down, for if "he looketh down, it will cause a moving down." To the faculty as a whole, our sincere thanks for their earnest efforts in our behalf, and the loyalty of all persons whom we can influence. And to Mr. Holland for the benefit of our school, we bequeath all the residue of our property, after the debts are fully discharged, and the funeral expenses met. The individual seniors, each having some distinctive possession, do hereby bequeath them as follows: Eloise Hamilton wills this handkerchief to Everill Raspberry to wipe the tears away when Audie Johnson departs from this school. Lois Lanier wills Russell Smith a worked buttonhole to keep him from staying up in the wee hours of the night making buttonholes for Miss Boyd. Loraine Andrews wills Everill Raspberry this jar of face cream to remove her freckles with. Bertie Whitaker wills to Rue Mahaffey her place out in the Physical Education class teaching and caring for the girls in the lower grades. This book is to keep their names in. Drue Smith wills D. W. Johnson a package of envelopes so he can write Eloise after she is out of school next year. Sybil Turner wills Clint Reeves a box of matches to prop his eyes open on the morning after the night before. Estelle Young wills this lemon to Willa Dell Laughlin to get that smile off her fact sometime. Kathleen Reid wills this bow to Vera Mae Durand so that she may never have to wish for one. Berwid Whitaker wills Russell Smith a pencil to outline history with. Adrian Hamilton wills Carlton Beard a pack of Bugler tobacco so that he won't always be bumming everybody's short. Audrey Lee Harper wills Christine Horton her seriousness so she won't laugh so much. Jimmy Durand wills Willa Dell Laughlin her popularity. Vera Mae Young wills Rue Mahaffey a package of envelopes to write to Adrian Hamilton when school is out. S. E. and Audie Johnson will their meanness to Andrew Jarrell and D. W. Johnson, so Mr. Holland will have something to do besides sleep. Annie Williams wills Clint Reeves a bottle of eye medicine. She is sure he will need it, because Lucille keeps him up so late. Quinton Turner wills Russell Smith his great speaking ability, so he can impress Mr. Holland next year. Laura Mae Beard wills Carlton Beard her Home Economics knowledge. Wilda Mae Chaney wills Andrew Jarrell a tube of lipstick, so he can have a good excuse to kiss the girls. Lucille Chaney wills Christine Horton a mail bag to provide ample room for those love lore letters she gets. The foregoing is the will of the Senior Class of Fairview High School, and we do solemnly declare that we published and executed the will in the presence of two lawful witnesses. In witness thereof we hereunto set our hands and seals this eighth day of June in the year of our Lord, 1942 A.D. Witnesses: Mr. C. C. Holmes Miss GeNelle Miller
