BARTON, Ernest H.  - planter, Lauderdale, La. This very successful young planter 
of St. James parish, La., resides on Minnie plantation, and is the owner of St. 
Emma plantation in Ascension parish. He was born in Assumption parish, La., in 
December, 1854, and is the son of E.D. Barton. (See sketch.) He received his 
education in the University of Virginia and graduated in national law, 
languages, etc. He read law for some time with the intention of following that 
profession, but gave it up and turned his attention to sugar planting. In 1876 
he became assistant manager of Trinity plantation, Assumption parish, and there 
remained until 1879, when he came to St. James parish. Here he managed St. 
Claire plantation until 1887, and then leased Minnie plantation from his aunt, 
Mrs. L. Himel, and has conducted that since. In 1891 he purchased St. Emma 
plantation in Ascension parish, consisting of 1,583 acres with 1,000 acres ready 
for cultivation, and he has a sugar house with all the latest improved devices 
for making refined sugar. His brother Walter is his agent and carries on this 
plantation. Mr. Barton received the appointment as member of the levee board and 
is holding that position at the present time. In 1879 he married Miss Bertha 
Beasley, daughter of J.W. Beasley, a very successful sugar planter of Assumption 
parish, and this union has been blessed by the birth of one son and two 
daughters. Mr. Barton is a stanch democrat in his political views.
