BROWN, Florence A. - (1838 - 1912)

Among the "old time" residences in Ascension parish, La., is the Linwood place. 
It is situated on the east bank of the Mississippi river, in the upper part of 
the parish, and is owned by MRS. FLORENCE A. BROWN and her two sons, J. NORFLEET 
BROWN and JOHN M. BROWN, both well known young men, the elder attending to the 
planting interest of the property and the younger, John M. Brown, looking after 
the plantation store. If the large old house could speak it could discourse of a 
variety of scenes, both gay and sad, for many a rebel has it seen within its 
walls, also many deaths, and much misery, as it was occupied during the war by 
federal troops for weeks, in which time they held "high carnival," destroying 
all the house and sugar house contained, the owners being absent. It still bears 
the marks of their sojourn, although thirty years have elapsed since those days. 
The Messrs. Brown are grandsons of the late J.N. Brown, of Iberville parish, 
La., a noted and very wealthy sugar planter forty years ago. This mother 
Florence A. Brown is the eldest daughter of the late W.C.S. Ventress of 
Ascension parish, La., who was also a large sugar planter and a member of many 
well-known families in both Louisiana and Mississippi, among whom are the 
Stewarts, Randolphs and Feltus, etc.
