Lucien Gautreau received a good practical education in his native parish and started out for himself as a planter in partnership with his brothers. He remained with them until twenty-five years of age and then began overseeing for John Crossley & Sons, with whom he remained nine years. In January 1889, he was appointed tax assessor of Ascension parish which position he still holds. Mr. Gautreau was married in January, 1874, to Miss EmŠline Terrieo, of St. James parish, La., and seven children were born to this union-six sons and one daughter.
