Sabin Savoie was born in the neighborhood of where he now lives March 17, 1853, being a son of Leufroi Savoie, also of this parish, and the owner of Ella plantation, on which his son Sabin is now living. The father died in 1878, at the age of fifty-nine years, having always been a planter and a successful one. His wife, Adeline Mollere, was also born in this parish, and is still living, her home being with her son Sabin. The latter spent his school days in the parish of his birth, in Jefferson college, and in Spring Hill, Ala., taking a commercial course in the latter institution. After completing his education he at once commenced planting, and this calling has since continued. In 1877 he assumed control of Ella plantation, which comprises 600 acres of fine farming land, 315 of which are devoted to the culture of sugar cane. In addition to the large amount of sugar he annually manufactures, he has been engaged in the mercantile business for the past three years; but as he was unfortunately burned out three times he decided to abandon that enterprise. Ella plantation is located six miles below Donaldsonville, is exceptionally fertile and well tilled, and yields a paying annual income. In 1871 he was married to Miss Camilla LaBlanc, a native of Ascension parish, who died in 1874, having become the mother of a daughter who still survives her. In 1876 Mr. Savoie took for his second wife Latecia St. Martin, a sister of the sheriff of Ascension parish, and their union has been blessed in the birth of two sons and two daughters. The family belong to the Catholic church.
