(Donaldsonville, La.) 1871-current, July 13, 1918, Image 2 July 13, 1918 Darrow Boy Wounded in France. - Corporal Earl M. Marchand, an Ascension boy serving with the United States Marines on the battle front in France, was severely wounded in a recent engagement, according to telegrams received by his father from both the war and navy departments. A letter written by a nurse in the hospital to which the young man was conveyed for treatment, and dated three days after he had been shot down, stated that he was doing well at that time. In the Marine Corps casualty list published by the New Orleans Item and States last Monday, the name of Corporal Marchand appeared in the list of men who had died from wounds, but hope is felt that this statement is erroneous, since no message confirming the announcement has come from any governmental source. In the first despatches (sic) sent to the family it was promised they would be promptly advised should there be anything further to communicate, and since nothing more has been heard through official channels, the relatives and friends of the fallen fighter are cherishing the hope that there is no foundation for the report that he has been called upon to make the supreme sacrifice for freedom. Young Marchand is a son of Robert Marchand, of Darrow, and is a brother of A. Marchand, one of the barbers employed in the Oubre shop in this city. He enlisted in the Marine Corps about eleven months ago.
