BABIN, ANDREW JUST A centenarian and a lifelong resident of Dutchtown in Ascension Parish, he died Thursday, Oct. 15, 1998, at Riverview Medical Center, Gonzales. He was 103. Interment in Prairieville Cemetery. Survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Cora Lee Lafleur, Barbara and William R. Holden, all of Baton Rouge, and Harriet and Paul E. Miller, Prairieville; two granddaughters and their spouses, Peggy and Brian L. Theis, Plano, Texas, and Judith and Daniel P. Stegemoeller, Roswell, Ga.; two great-granddaughters, Erin Babin Theis and Gretchen Geller Theis, Plano; a great-grandson, Benton Paul Stegemoeller, Roswell; a stepgrandson and spouse, Brian and Joni Miller, Baton Rouge; a stepgranddaughter and spouse, Renee and Kevin Rivault, Lafayette; six stepgreat-grandchildren, seven nieces and nephews, 18 great, 20 great-great and 11 great-great-great nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his wife, Harriet Smith Babin; parents, Lucas Zenon and Cora Marie Babin; five sisters, Celanie Pellerin, Celine Landry, Noelie Wilkens, Nita Berdon and Mildred Babin; and three brothers, Larry J., Wickliffe M. and Benton P. Babin. He was a 1917 graduate of LSU with a bachelor of science degree in arts and science, majoring in American history and French. He was active in the Military Cadet Corps and the Glee Club. As the eldest Ole War Skule cadet, he represented LSU alumni at the dedication of the Lod Cook Alumni Center in 1994, and at the Veterans’ Day celebration in 1995. He graduated from Dutchtown High School in 1913 and later was a teacher of history and French there and at Gonzales High School for almost 20 years. He was an employee of the Louisiana Department of Highways for another 20 years and a deputy clerk of court in Ascension for a few years right after graduating from LSU. He was a member of the American Legion Gautreau-Williams Post No. 81, Gonzales, St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Prairieville, the East Ascension Genealogical and Historical Society and the Louisiana State Employees’ Retirement Association. Formerly, he belonged to the Louisiana Cattlemen's Association and the New River Drainage Board. He was recognized as an authority on American history and was touted by many as the "Ascension Parish Historian." Pallbearers will be E. Louis Berdon, James R. Gillen, Robert R. Melancon, Brian T.
