Denham Springs, May 18. - Mrs. Mary Batts, 87 years of age, one of the oldest 
citizens of Ascension parish, died Saturday afternoon at 5:30 o'clock, at her 
home near Acy, in East Ascension. Having been feeble for some time, her death is 
attributable to injuries she suffered when she fell from the steps of her home, 
breaking a wrist and injuring her back the day before her death. Services were 
conducted by the Rev. J.F. Arceneaux from New River Baptist church, near St. 
Amant, of which deceased had been a member for nearly 60 years, and her body 
laid to rest in the church cemetery, at 5 o'clock Sunday afternoon. Mrs. Batts, 
formerly Miss Mary Gonzales, was born in East Ascension, March 9, 1844, a member 
of one of the pioneer families of that section. She was first married to John 
Sevario who lived but a few years following the marriage. She was later married 
to Frederick Hickson Batts, a veteran of the Civil war, who has also been dead a 
number of years. Besides one half-sister, Mrs. Allen W. Martin of Gonzales. Mrs. 
Batts is survived by one son, Michael G. Sevario of Acy, a member of the 
Ascension parish police jury for several years and prominently connected with 
the civil and political life of the parish for the past 30 years, one grandson, 
John Sevario of Sorrento, one grand-daughter, Mrs. Solomon Barman of Baton 
Rouge, two great-grand-children and a large family connection.
