(Donaldsonville, La.) 1871-current, June 07, 1919, page 2 Burnside. - Again it becomes our sad duty to record the death of another veteran ex-employe of the Miles Planting and Manufacturing Co. Alfred Beckner died in Baton Rouge, exactly one month ago - May 4. Deceased was born in Virginia in 1855 and was therefore 63 years old at the time of his death. He came to Louisiana in 1879, with a letter of introduction from his friend and benefactor, Oliver Beirne, to John Burnside. He began his planting career on Armant plantation, where he remained seven years. He was transferred to Conway plantation Jan. 1, 1886, remaining there eight years, when he was promoted to the management of Riverton, which position he held for eleven years, making a total of twenty-six years spent in the service of the Burnside-Berne-Miles people. On Jan. 1, 1904, he removed to East Baton Rouge, to assume possession of a highly improved model farm of 110 acres which he had purchased. He was an original stockholder of the Burnside-Donaldsonville Packet Co. Unlike a great many who come from other states to make Louisiana their home, Mr. Beckner did not go back to Virginia for a wife, but selected as a life companion, a creole girl, Miss Lilly Vives of Ibevrille parish. She preceded him to the grave a few years ago, leaving three sons, Alfred, Marion and Floyd, who survive their parents. Deceased was of a genial disposition, witty, a splendid story teller and was popular with all who knew him.
