BIGNEY. - Mark Frederick Bigney, editor of the New Orleans City Item, died in that city on Friday, April 30, at 8 P.M., of Bright's disease, and his remains were laid to rest to-day in the Girod street cemetery. Mr. Bigney was a native of Nova Scotia, 69 years of age. He emigrated to New Orleans some forty years ago and engaged in literary pursuits as editor of the Jefferson Live Oak, subsequently arriving on the staffs of the Crescent, True Delta, Mirror, Picayune, Times and Republican. In 1877 the City Item was established, with Mr. Bigney as editor-in-chief, a position he continued to hold until his death. In addition to his well known abilities as a prose writer of great force and elegance, he possessed poetical talent of a high order and contributed many gems to the polite literature of the day. In 1867 he collated and published a small volume of his poems, and those he has written since would make another volume quite as large. His interest in all affairs that pertained to the well being of the city and State in which he lived was of the deepest character, and few pens have done greater or better work than his in the public service. Mr. Bigney had been twice married. His first wife, who died about two years ago, was an Alexander of Alexandria, Virginia, maternal grandmother of Mrs. Bentley of the Chief. His second was Miss Marcella Curley, to whom he was married only about three months ago, and who survives him. Besides a widow, he leaves a young adopted daughter to mourn his loss, and to these bereaved ones the profound sympathy of a large circle of friends as well as the public in general will be extended.
