LEO BLANCHARD. - Prominent Citizen and Leading Druggist Gone to His Reward. - P. Leo Blanchard, veteran of the civil war, prominent citizen and druggist, and resident of this city for the past forty-five years, passed away at his home in this city last Tuesday at 1:15 o'clock p.m., after a long illness, aged 73 years. Mr. Blanchard who had always been in robust health, was taken ill several months ago, and despite the best medical attention and skillful nursing which he received there was no improvement in his condition; from time to time he grew gradually worse until about a month ago when it became evident that there was no hope for his recovery. He bore his sufferings with great fortitude and conversed jovially with his friends and members of his family until a few days prior to his death, when he became unconscious and remained thus until the end. The funeral took place Wednesday afternoon at 1 o'clock. Services were held at the Catholic church after which the remains were laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery. There was a special choir for the services at the church, composed of Judge Sam A. LeBlanc, Leonce LeBlanc, Chas. Dugas, Mrs. Philip LeBlanc and the St. Vincent choir. The floral offerings were many and beautiful, the casket being literally covered with them. Mr. Blanchard was born in Donaldsonville, on May 8, 1849. After the death of his mother which occurred in 1864 he removed to New Orleans and entered the employ of E.J. Hart & Co., Ltd., the only wholesale drug house in the south at that time. On the 26th of March, 1871, he was graduated from the University of Louisiana (which is now Tulane University) receiving the degree of Master of Pharmacy. From 1874 to 1878 he was employed by P. Barthe, one of the oldest druggist in New Orleans at that time and on Jan. 1, 1878, he came to Donaldsonville, and entered the drug firm of Duffel & Claverie, composed of Doctors John Edward Duffel and Beauville Claverie. In 1879 he acquired the full ownership of the business, which he owned and conducted up to the time of his death. In 1885 he was married to Miss Estelle Ferrier of New Orleans, and of this issue were born two sons, Ferrier P. Blanchard and Pierre V. Blanchard. Mrs. Blanchard died Nov. 28, 1898, and on Dec. 21, 1901, Mr. Blanchard was united in marriage to Miss Jeanne Ferrier, who with his two sons and four grandchildren survive him. Deceased was a French scholar and a gentlemen of the old school, of strong character and positive opinions. He had a quiet and charitable dispsition (sic) and many are those in this city and vicinity who were the beneficiaries of his charities and by whom he will be sadly missed. The Chief proffers sympathy to the family in their great bereavement.
