Fulgence Bourgeois (Special to the Picayune) Donaldsonville, Sept. 10. - Mr. Fulgence Bourgeois, a prominent citizen and planter of Ascension parish, died on his Cottage Grove plantation yesterday at 3:30 p.m., after comparatively a brief illness. Last week Mr. Bourgeois had a stroke of apoplexy, from which he never rallied, and death ended his sufferings. He was one of the best known and most popular citizens in this section. He was 61 years of age and a native of St. James parish, where he will be buried today in the family tomb in St. Michael's cemetery. Mr. Bourgeois was at one time manager of the Evan Hall plantation, Godchaux's Souvenir, and last year worked the Crescent as a tenant. Some weeks ago he purchased of Mr. J. C. Green the Cottage Grove plantation, on the Valley Road, in this parish. He leaves a widow and six children: Mrs. J. Achille Landry, of New Orleans; Mrs. Leo Melancon, of Ascension; Misses Corinne and Rita Bourgeois and Messrs. Fulgence Bourgeois, Jr., and Henry Bourgeois, the latter a volunteer in Company E, First Louisiana Regiment. source: The Louisiana Planter and Sugar Manufacture, volume 21, page 181 The death of Mr. Fulgence Bourgeois, which occurred on the 9th inst., was a shock to the entire community. Deceased was 61 years of age, a native of the parish of St. James, and had resided in Southern Louisiana all his life, pursuing successively the occupation of overseer, manager, tenant and planter. He had but recently purchased Mr. J.C. Green's Cottage Farm, as reported in this correspondence last week, and the misfortune of his death is rendered still greater by the fact that he had just embarked upon a promising planting venture in his own behalf. He was a most estimable gentleman in all the relations of life and his demise is mourned by many warm friends besides the widow, four daughters and two sons, to whom he was an exceptionally devoted husband and indulgent parent. The daughters are Marie, wife of J. Achille Landry, of New Orleans; Adline, wife of Leo Melancon, of this parish; Misses Corinne and Rita; the sons, Fulgence, Jr., and Henry L. Bourgeois. The widow and sons will doubtless retain possession of Cottage Farm, the elder of the young men having had several years experience as an assistant manager under his father's capable direction. The remains of the lamented planter were laid to rest in the Bourgeois family tomb at St. Michael Church, St. James parish, last Saturday morning.
