(Communicated.) In the New Orleans papers of Oct. 3 appeared the following modest obituary: Died -- At Emmittsburg, Md., on Oct. 1, aged seventy-seven years, Mathilde Comstock, known in religion as Sister Mathilde of the Sisters of Charity. Called to the religious life fifty-two years ago, few in her native town knew Sister Mathilde very long. Yet, well may Donaldsonville be proud of this distinguished daughter, both for the good, beautiful life she lived, and the eminent services she gave to the order she had joined. Sister Mathilde was born in Donaldsonville, her mother being Hortense Terrio, and her father John Comstock. She was educated at St. Vincent's Institute, and early evinced a desire to become a religious, her quiet, retiring disposition naturally fitting her for the unassuming life of the Sister of Charity. In the community she also found work which brought into play her intellectual gifts. The first twenty-two years of her vocation were spent in New Orleans, she being one of the founders of St. Simeon's School. During the remaining years of her active life she was at Emmittsburg, filling the important office of secretary to the Mother Superior. Her death has left a void in the Sisterhood, every member of which will cherish her memory. All who knew her attest that her life was a perfect rosary of saintly aspirations and exemplary deeds. - ONE WHO KNEW HER.
