Distinguished Ascensionite Dead. - Rear Admiral Vincendon Lazarus Cottman, United 
States navy [sic], who died in Washington Friday of last week, was a native of 
this parish, having been born on a plantation near Donaldsonville in 1852. He was 
the son of Thomas Cottman and Marie Louise de Tournillon Cottman. The father of 
Admiral Cottman was a practicing physician in Ascension parish in ante bellum 
days. After the war he moved with his family to New York city.
