DUFFEL DEAD. - Nestor of the Ascension Bar Had Nearly Attained 85 years. - Donaldsonville, La., March 13. - Judge Henry L. Duffel, distinguished jurist, former representative and nestor of the Ascension Bar, died at his home, Woodstock Plantation, in the First Ward of Ascension Parish, this morning at 1 o'clock. He was in the eighty-fifth year of his age. He had been in failing health for several months, and the end was not unexpected. The funeral will take place to-morrow morning, the cortege leaving the family home at 8 o'clock. Services will be held here in the Catholic Church of the Sacred Heart. Judge Duffel was a true type of the old Southern gentlemen. He was born on Woodstock Plantation July 29, 1821. He was a son of the late Judge Albert Duffel and Celeste Landry, his mother being a daughter of Joseph Landry. He was educated at Mount St. Mary's College, Emmitsburg, Md., and studied under a private tutor at Lynchburg, Va. While at the latter place he met Ann Dennington, who became his wife. She died about fifteen or twenty years ago. When he returned home he took up the study of law under his father, and was admitted to the Bar when 21 years of age. He was appointed Judge of the old Fourth Judicial District, composed of the Parishes of Ascension, St. John, St. James and St. Charles, in 1878, when he was succeeded by Judge John A. Cheevers. In 1884 he was elected Judge of the old Twenty-first Judicial District, composed of the Parishes of Ascension and St. James; was re-elected in 1888, and served until his retirement, in 1892, when he was succeeded by Judge Walter Guion. Judge Duffel was at one time a member of the Police Jury, represented his parish in the State Legislature, a member of the Democratic Executive Committee, and of the old Ascension Branch Sugar Planters' Association. He had held at various times other positions of honor and trust. Judge Duffel leaves one son, Henry E. Duffel, a merchant of Hohen Solms, in this parish; two daughters, Celeste, a Sister of Charity, of St. Louis, Mo., and Mrs. Lelia Duffel, wife of Dr. Edward Duffel; several grandchildren and one great-grandchild. As a mark of respect to his memory the front of the courthouse has been draped in mourning and the flag of the building place at half-mast.
