The man's condition was such that he was unable to give his name or residence, but shortly after 11 o'clock a message was sent from the fourth precinct station, making inquiries about Victor Duffel, who was missing from his home, No. 1325 North Prieur street. As the prisoner's description tallied with that of the missing man, Sargent Seelhorst and Corporal Magnon at once went to his cell to awaken him, and in their surprise found the unfortunate man cold in death. The man's relatives were thereupon notified and shortly after his nephew called at the station and fully identified the body. The deceased, he said, had been suffering for some time with heart trouble, and this probably was the cause of his death. The deceased was a native of Ascension parish, and was employed as a clerk at the grocery store of Nicholas Frey. No. 1031 Decatur street. source: Times-Picayune (New Orleans, LA) Sat., Feb. 19, 1898, page 13 NOT DRUNK - Mr. Duffel Was a Sober and Respected Citizen. - The family of Victor E. Duffel, the unfortunate man who was found dead in a cell in the Elysian Fields street police station a day or so ago, deny that Mr. Duffel was intoxicated when arrested by the officer who incarcerated him upon a charge of being drunk. Mr. L.F.H. Duffel, a nephew of the deceased, states that for a number of years his uncle has been a sufferer from Bright's disease, and that the family physician, Dr. Charbonnet, had expressed the opinion that when the disease reached a stage sufficiently severe to cause convulsions, the sufferer would be likely to expire from the collapse. Mr. Duffel is of the opinion that his uncle was stricken with a convulsion, from the effects of which he became unconscious, and, being in this state, was unable to explain his real condition to the officer who made the arrest.
