(Donaldsonville, La.) 1871 - current, February 25, 1905, Image 4 Death of Alfred Esneault. - Alfred Esneault, one of the most prominent citizens of this parish and founder of the lumber firm of A. Esneault & Sons, died at his home in Faubourg la Pipe at 3:20 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, aged 74 years and 16 days. Mr. Esneault had been in poor health for a number of years, but his condition was not serious up to a couple of weeks ago, when he contracted pneumonia. Every effort was exerted to check the progress of the dreaded disease, but despite the most devoted nursing and notwithstanding all that medical science could do, the patient grew gradually weaker and at 3:20 o'clock Tuesday afternoon passed quietly and peacefully into the long sleep that knows no waking. At his bedside were the members of his family and a number of old and true friends, and the sufferer's last hours on earth were brightened by the sight of familiar faces and the clasp of loyal hands. The remains of the lamented gentleman were laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery at 3 o'clock p. m. Wednesday, after services at the Church of the Sacred Heart conducted by Rev. Father Massardier. The pall-bearers were Henry, Arthur, Gibbons, Anatole, Camille and Ulysses Esneault, all grandchildren of the deceased, and the large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends who attended the obsequies attested in high degree the esteem and reverence in which the venerable gentleman was held by all who knew him. Mr. Esneault was a native of the parish of St. John and came to Ascension in 1849. He secured employment with Simon Braud, who operated a sawmill in Faubourg la Pipe near the site of the present Picayune mill. In 1867 Mr. Esneault entered into a partnership with Mr. Braud which continued until 1878, when he withdrew from the firm and formed a partnership with his two sons, Albert and Cecilien Esneault, under the name of A. Esneault & Sons. The firm established the Picayune sawmill in Faubourg la Pipe and in 1882 they built the Lafourche sawmill in Port Barrow. In 1890 the Esneaults purchased Mr. Braud's mill and consolidated it with the two established by themselves, locating the new mill in Faubourg la Pipe on the site occupied by the present Picayune mill. On Nov. 4, 1851, Mr. Esneault led to the altar Miss Mathilde Lorio, a daughter of Cyprien Lorio, of St. Charles parish. Nine children were born to the devoted couple, of whom six were boys, Albert, Cecilien, Oscar, Camille, Rene and Louis Esneault, and three girls, Eugenie, Cecile and Heloise Esneault. Four of these, Albert, Cecilien, Rene and Heloise Esneault, survive Mr. Esneault, together with his wife and a large number of grandchildren and other relatives. On the 4th of November, 1901, Mr. and Mrs. Esneault celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of their marriage, and the event was made the occasion of a family re-union which will long be cherished in the hearts and memories of those who participated. Mr. Esneault was a model husband, a devoted father, a staunch friend and an admirable citizen, and his death is a distinct loss to his family, friends and acquaintances, and to the community in which he lived. To the grief- stricken widow and children The Chief begs leave to tender sincerest sympathy.
