Ganel. - It is with sincere regret that The Chief chronicles the passing away of Mrs. prosper J. Ganel, nee Miss Estelle Vega (sic), who died at her home in this city last Sunday afternoon at 1 o'clock, after an illness of four months. Mrs. Ganel, who had always enjoyed the best of health, was stricken with appendicitis, early in November last. The attack was so acute that she was removed to New Orleans, where an operation was performed a few days later. The operation was successful and for a time it was hoped that she would recover; but owing to a set-back which she suffered, a second operation became necessary, and from that time doubts were entertained for her ultimate recovery. Her strong constitution and wonderful vitality with-stood the ordeal, and believing that she was improving, she was brought back to her home about a month ago, in order that she might have better care and attention at the hands of her relatives and friends; but shortly thereafter there was a change for the worst in her condition, and despite good medical attention and tender nursing, she grew gradually weaker and sank rapidly until she finally passed peacefully away surrounded by those who had been near and dear to her life. She seemed to have known that the end was near, yet she made a heroic fight against great odds and bore her sufferings with remarkable fortitude to the end. A peculiarly sad incident of her last illness and death was the fact that her husband was himself critically ill in the same house, unable to assist in the nursing and care of his wife. The funeral took place Monday morning, with solemn requiem mass at the Catholic church at 9 o'clock, Rev. C.M. Chambon officiating, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery in the presence of a large number of sorrowing relatives and friends. Deceased was a native of Assumption parish and the youngest daughter of the late Raphael Vega, in his day one of the leading planters of that parish. She was a very active woman and always took a leading part in and gave much of her time to social and church functions. She was kind hearted and charitable and ever ready to lend a helping hand to the sick and distressed. She was a good and pious Catholic and always prompt in the performance of her religious duties and in the observance of her religious obligations. Her demise is a source of much regret to her many relatives and friends. Besides her husband she leaves to mourn her loss, four sisters: Mrs. Domingue Cabaliero, of Paincourtville; Mrs. Edgard Guillot, of Plattenville; Mrs. A.M. Vega, of New Orleans, and Miss Mathilde Vega of this city, and a large number of nephews and neices (sic). To them The Chief tenders sympathy in their great bereavement.
