(Donaldsonville, La.) 1871-current, June 14, 1884, page 3 Reverend Jean Marie Jeffroy [sic]. - The funeral of the late Father Geffroy took place in St. James parish last Friday at 10 A. M. In his parlor the body lay robed in sacerdotal vestments, and hundreds called to view the remains, and stayed to whisper a prayer for the repose of his soul. The body was carried from the house to the church by the following priests: Fathers Bigot, President of Jefferson College, Ceuppens, Harnais, Ravoire, Durel, S. M. of St. Michael's, Rapier, S. M., Thouvenin, S. M. of Jefferson College. On a catafalque in front of the altar the coffin containing the remains of the dead priest were placed. The spacious church was filled with friends of the deceased, and if flowers be the language of love, how dearly beloved must have been the departed priest. Before mass matins and lauds were chanted by the clergy. Solemn requiem mass was sung by Father Juhel, assisted by Fathers Guillemin, S. M., and Jobart as deacon and sub-deacon. Father Harnais acted as master of ceremonies. At the close of the mass, the panegyric was pronounced by Rev. Father Chasse, who preached at Father Geffroy's first mass. It was a warm and affectionate tribute to a worthy priest, made in the presence of death and the dead priest's friends. He spoke of the heroic and unselfish life of the good little priest, who left his home and all that was dear to him and came across the seas to live another life; who gave himself a holocaust to God, and made a sacrifice of everything that a man's heart naturally cherishes. He said the ten years of his priestly life were full of rich and noble promise. That he does not go empty-handed, for a good priest does not die as one of the simple faithful. A cloud of witnesses attend him for he had in his company all those whom he had assisted to their last end. He asked all while mourning his loss, to be mindful of him in their prayers, that he on whom God's own heavenly home, with the congregation of all the just, he may sit down to rest forever more. The following clergy were present: Rev. Father Chasse, chancellor of the diocese; Bigot, S. M., President of Jefferson College, Harnais of Plaquemine, Ceuppens of Donaldsonville, Jobart of St. Charles. Juhel of Iberville, Dubourg of the Vacherie, Ravoire of St. John the Baptist, Durel, S. M., of St. Michael's, Rapier and Thouvenin, S. M., of Jefferson College.
