(Donaldsonville, Louisiana) Wednesday, 22 December 1897, page 3 Captain Gonzales Dead. - Several weeks ago we reported in our paper that Captain Joseph Gonzales was stricken down with paralysis, and today it becomes our painful duty to chronicle his demise which occurred at his home at Gonzales post-office, this parish, last night at 11 o'clock. Captain Gonzales was one of New River's pioneer cotton planters and was at one time Sheriff of Ascension. He figured prominently in parochial politics. Deceased was 62 years, 6 months and 23 days old and leaves a large family to mourn his deplorable loss. The funeral will take place from the New River Catholic church tomorrow forenoon at 11 o'clock. The DAILY TIMES tenders its deepest condolences to the bereaved ones.
