(Donaldsonville, La.) 1871-current, October 12, 1912, page 4 Death of Michael Hughes. - Michael Hughes, aged sixty-eight years, seven months and sixteen days, a native of Louisiana and for more than thirty years a resident of this city, died at 12:30 o'clock p.m. Thursday at the Soldiers' Home in New Orleans, of which institution he had been an inmate for the past several weeks. The funeral took place at 10 o'clock yesterday forenoon, with interment in the tomb of the Soldiers' Home. Mr. Hughes, or "Uncle Mike," as he was affectionately called, had been a familiar figure on the streets of this city since 1880, in which year he came to Donaldsonville to accept employment as a shoemaker in the shop of the late S. Goette. Since the closing of the latter establishment a year or so ago, Mr. Hughes had been employed about the plant of the Donaldsonville Ice Company, of which S. Goette is president and manager, and some weeks ago, his condition having become quite feeble, he was conveyed to New Orleans and placed in the Soldiers' Home. He was a veteran of the civil war, having served with gallantry and distinction throughout the fearful struggle as a member of Company K, Sixth Louisiana Regiment. Generous to a fault, upright and honorable in all his dealings with his fellow- man, and of a kindly and genial disposition, "Uncle Mike" was liked by everybody who knew him, and many a word of regret will be evoked by the announcement of his death, and many a silent prayer said for the repose of his soul. Messrs. Henry Goette and Paul Willheit, Dr. Clarence Goette and Miss Josephine Goette went to New Orleans to attend the funeral.
