Marx Klein, rabbi of Bikur Cholim Congregation and one of the best known and most prominent citizens of Donaldsonville, died suddenly early yesterday morning at the residence of Mrs. Andrew Gingry, Sr., at the corner of Railroad avenue and Claiborne street, where he occupied apartments. Dr. Klein attended the commencement exercises of the Donaldsonville High School Thursday night and returned to his room about 11:30 o'clock. The supposition is that immediately after retiring he expired from an attack of heart failure, his body being discovered at 9 o'clock yesterday morning after his non-appearance at the breakfast table had aroused the suspicion that all was not well with him. Dr. Klein was a native of Hatter Elsas, Germany, and had attained the age of fifty-five years. He came to the United States thirty-six years ago and settled in Alexandria, where he remained until 1884. In 1886 Dr. Klein located in Baton Rouge, residing there until 1900, when he returned to Europe for a stay of three years. In 1903 he came to Donaldsonville to accept the spiritual directorship of Bikur Cholim Congregation, which position he filled with marked ability and faithfulness up to the time of his death. The funeral will take place at 10 o'clock tomorrow forenoon under the auspices of Ascension Lodge No 251, F and A. M., of which organization deceased was a zealous and popular member. Delegations from Ascension Chapter No. 49, R.A.M., and Kenneth Lodge No 41, K. of P., will also attend the obsequies and accompany the remains of their departed brother to their last resting place in the Jewish cemetery. Dr. Klein is survived by one sister and four brothers, all of whom reside in Europe, and two cousins, Miss H. Hirsch and Mrs. Charles Bloch of New Orleans. To these afflicted ones The Chief tenders assurances of sincere sympathy.
