(Donaldsonville, La.) 1871 - current, August 22, 1914, Image 3 Death of an Ascension Patriarch. - Another of the old landmarks of Ascension parish has closed his mission on earth and joined the great majority. Drausin Kling, Sr., a native and life-long resident of the eighth ward, after a life well spent and replete with good deeds, sank into the long sleep at 8 o'clock Wednesday morning, Aug. 5, at his home two miles from Dutchtown. Deceased had attained the venerable age of eighty-four years, four months and eight days, and was one of the oldest citizens of the parish, as he was one of its best known and most honored. He was a soldier of the south, and served his native land faithfully and well throughout that memorable period of the country's history. Besides this badge of honor, he was a good man of clean character and lofty purposes, who fulfilled life's every duty in a conscientious and honorable manner, and at the end passed to his reward with a smile on his lips and faith in his heart. The remains of this lamented patriarch were laid to rest in the Catholic burial ground at Prairieville on Thursday, Aug. 6, at 10 o'clock a. m., after services conducted by Rev. J. C. Gonon, pastor of the Cornerview Catholic church. The funeral procession was one of the largest and most imposing which has ever been seen in that community, the line of mourners in buggies and other vehicles who came to escort the body of the venerable gentleman to its last resting place extending nearly a mile. Both the size and character of the cortege gave evidence of the degree of esteem and respect in which the deceased was held, and the widespread sorrow caused by his demise. Mr. Kling is survived by his devoted wife, who had been the faithful partner of his joys and sorrows for the long span of 59 years, 11 months and 8 days. His descendants include seven daughters, two sons, fifty-four grandchildren and fifty great-grandchildren, besides whom he leaves a large number of other relatives and family connections. His passing away removes another of those heroic characters who lifted this country out of the gloom and desolation of the reconstruction period and prepared it for the era of development and prosperity now impending. Peace to his eternal sleep. File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/la/ascension/obits/klingsr7969gob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/lafiles/ File size: 2.9 Kb
