Joseph T. Landry, prominent steamboatman (sic) and veteran of the civil war, died at 11:05 a. m. Tuesday, May 7, at his residence in New Orleans, after an illness of eight days' duration, aged seventy-seven years and eleven months. The funeral took place the following morning at 10 o'clock, with services at St. Ann's Catholic church and interment in New St. Louis cemetery No. 3, Rev. Father Bosch officiating. Capt. Landry was a native of this parish and resided in Donaldsonville for more than two-score years. At the age of 18 he began steamboating (sic) and continued at this occupation, with the exception of the four years of the civil war, until eight years ago, when he became a member of the Boylan police, in New Orleans. He had been a resident of the latter city for the past thirty years. At the outbreak of hostilities between the north and south Capt. Landry enlisted in the Twenty-Seventh Louisiana Regiment, and served throughout the war as a member of Company D of that regiment. Capt. Landry was married twice, his first wife being Miss Marina Montero, and his second Miss Sydney Mullett, both of this city. He is survived by his second wife, seven children, Messrs. J. T. Landry, Jr., Charlie, Emory, Archie and Theophile Landry, Miss Sydney Landry and Mrs. A. E. Vuillot; a brother, Capt. M. N. Landry, formerly of this city, but now a resident of New Orleans, and two sisters, Mrs. Ambroise Rodriguez and Mrs. Aglae Ramey, both of Donaldsonville. The death of this old citizen will be greatly mourned by a large number of friends, for he was among the best-known of the older generation of river men, having served as mate and captain on many well-known boats.
