(Donaldsonville, La.) 1871-current, January 14, 1911, page 4 Death of Lazard Leumas. - Lazard Leumas, aged forty-nine years, a native of Lafayette, La., but a resident of this city since childhood, died suddenly from an attack of heart failure at 9:50 o'clock last Saturday morning while engaged in operating the newspaper press in the office of the Donaldsonville Democrat. Suddenly throwing up his hand and at the same time calling the first name of Almire LeBlanc, foreman of the establishment, he fell on his back to the floor and without uttering another sound or making another movement passed peacefully away before medical assistance could reach him. Dr. Tuite Hanson, who was immediately summoned, pronounced heart disease as the cause of death, and this diagnosis was confirmed by Dr. Paul T. Thibodaux, coroner, who arrived shortly afterward and held an inquest over the body. The remains were conveyed to the residence of Jules Leumas, a brother of the deceased, from whence the funeral took place at 10:30 o'clock Sunday forenoon, with services at the house and interment in the Jewish cemetery, Raphael Singer officiating. The pall-bearers were James Von Lotten of The Chief, Judge Edmund Maurin of the Democrat, Jacob Blum, August Goette, F.B. Lemann and Jasmin Tobias. Lazard Leumas was a hard-working, industrious man, and, in his humble sphere, a good, law-abiding citizen. Although one of God's afflicted, he made himself useful in a number of ways, and was better known and perhaps more generally liked than many men who are gifted with all their faculties or make greater pretension to rank and ability than did he. He was quiet and peaceful in his demeanor, earnest in his efforts to please and ever ready to be of service, and there are many people in this community - men, women and children alike - who will miss him sorely and hold his memory in tender regard. Deceased was connected with this paper off and on for thirty years or more in the capacity of pressman and carrier, and had done similar service for a long period with the Donaldsonville Times and Donaldsonville Democrat. he was faithful in the discharge of his duties and upright in his business dealings with his employers and all men, and more than this cannot be said in praise of any man. The surviving relatives are two brothers Jules and Joseph Leumas, to whom profound sympathy is extended.
