ARISTIDE LANDRY. - Last Wednesday evening, at half past 5 o'clock, Hon. J. Aristide Landry, an old citizen of this parish, died at his residence, a short distance below Donaldsonville, at the age of 63 years, 7 months and 28 days. Deceased had long suffered from cancer of the neck, and his death, we understand, caused by this affliction, but the actual prostration which preceded his demise was of short duration. Mr. Landry occupied, during his lifetime, a prominent position in the community of which he was a valued and respected member, and always took a lively interest in all questions affecting the public welfare. He was a member of the State Legislature as early as 1840, was elected to the congress from the Third Congressional District in 1852, and served as President of the Police Jury of this parish in 1861. Prior to the war he held the position of First Sergeant in the Chasseurs de l' Ascension, a military organization of considerable local fame. He was afterwards attached to Company B of the Cannoneers of Donaldsonville, and intended to enter the Confederate service, but for causes with which we are not familiar, the company disbanded before being called into the field. Deceased was twice married and leaves a widow and eight sons and daughters to mourn him. The children of his first marriage are Louis A. and Estelle Landry; those of the second marriage, J. Trasimond, Irma, Samuel, Fernand, Blanche and Leah Landry. His first wife was Miss Ann Estelle Landry, and the second, Miss Mizida Landry, both of whom were his cousins. Although he had nearly reached the allotted term of man's life, he was well preserved and appeared much younger than he really was. The funeral took place Thursday evening and was very largely attended, attesting the respect and esteem in which the deceased was held in the community. We join in the feeling of general regret and sadness caused by the death of this old and honored citizen, and also in extending to his relatives assurance of profound sympathy in their bereavement.
