MAURIN. - Prominent Young Business Man Passes Away After a Long Illness - Sketch of His Career. - Joseph Robert Maurin, one of the leading citizens of this town, died at his home in Lessard street at 5 o'clock Thursday morning, aged 32 years and 17 days. Mr. Maurin became ill early last spring and in March entered Hotel Dieu, remaining there until he had gained sufficient strength to permit him to make the trip to Stafford Mineral Springs, at Vossburg, Miss., where he spent the entire summer. He returned to Donaldsonville about Oct. 1 seemingly much improved in health, but a few days ago was taken ill again and was forced to seek his bed. His condition was not considered at all dangerous, however, and the news of his sudden death came as a great shock to his many friends in this community. Thursday morning when his devoted wife approached her husband's bedside to give him the usual medicine prescribed by the attending physician she discovered that he had breathed his last, death having come while he was peacefully sleeping. The funeral took place at noon yesterday and was largely attended, a number of persons having come in from surrounding parishes to be present at the obsequies. The services at the Catholic church and cemetery were conducted by Rev. Father Massardier, and were of the most solemn and impressive nature. Major Victor Maurin Camp, No. 38, U.C.V., which was named after Mr. Maurin's gallant father, and Major Victor St. Martin Camp, No. 126, U.S.C.V., attended the funeral in a body. The pall-bearers were Victor, Charles and Edmund Maurin, C.D. Gondran, Paul Bonnett, Meyer Netter and Dave Israel. The casket was covered with numerous beautiful floral designs. Joseph Robert Maurin was the youngest son of the late Major Victor Maurin and was born in this town Oct. 31, 1872. His early education was acquired at local private schools, after which he became a student in the commercial course at Jefferson College, St. James parish. After leaving Jefferson, he became a salesman in the store of his brothers, Charles and Louis Maurin, which position he retained until about ten years ago, when he embarked in business for himself. At first he opened a retail grocery, and afterwards branched out into the wholesale trade. Later he closed out that business and again went into the retail trade, establishing two successful stores - the First and Last Chance, in Railroad avenue, and the Best Grocery, in Mississippi street. In 1897 he was married to Miss Emma Nolan, daughter of the late Capt. J.T. Nolan, who owned and cultivated St. Elizabeth plantation, a short distance below Donaldsonville. He took an active interest in politics and in 1900 was elected a member of the police jury from the fourth ward, serving out his term with marked ability and success. At the inception of the campaign which preceded the Democratic primary last January, Mr. Maurin allied himself with the Jastremski-Bullion faction in this parish and announced as a candidate for clerk of court, but later withdrew and retired from active participation in the campaign. A token of the esteem in which Mr. Maurin was held was shown by the closing of all the Mississippi street stores during the progress of the funeral procession yesterday. Mrs. Maurin survives her husband, together with two little children - Garnet, aged 5 years, and Nolan, 3 years old. There are also left to mourn Mr. Maurin's loss his mother, Widow Victor Maurin, a sister, Mrs. J. Numa Colomb, and three brothers, Victor, Charles and Edmund Maurin. To the bereaved family The Chief tenders heartfelt sympathy.
