Colomb, the messenger of death summoned to the eternal world the spirit of Mrs. Lise Vives Maurin, widow of the late Major Victor Maurin, who died in 1875. She was gentle, cultured and unselfish. Her charity knew no bounds. Her kindly spirit pervaded not only the home circle in which the light of her christian life shone with special splendor, but extended throughout the community, both the rich and the poor testifying to the loveliness and saintliness of her character. The widow of a Confederate officer, she loved the south, never wavering in her devotion to its sacred cause. The loss of her husband, an elder daughter, two younger sons, and the eldest son only last year, seemed but to deepen her faith in the wisdom of her Creator. Bravely she took up her cross of sorrow and with cheerful spirit lived as a shining light of christian endeavor. Her religious obligations were always her highest duty. Deceased was a native of Assumption parish, the daughter of Hypolite Vives and Eulalie Mollere, who owned large sugar plantations in that parish. Her grandfather was Dr. (Don) Juan Vives, a surgeon in the army of Spain in colonial days, and stationed at the post of Valenzuela. He remained in this country and acquired extensive holdings at Valenzuela and elsewhere. A brother, Francisco Diorisio Vives, was governor of Cuba, and another brother, Gen. Carlos Vives, was a division commander in the army of Spain during the Napoleonic wars. Mrs. Maurin's mother died when she was an infant, her father some years afterwards, whereupon she made her home with her sister, Mrs. Robert Maurin. At fourteen years she matriculated at the famous Ursulines Convent in New Orleans, where her sister, aunts and other relatives had been educated. Nearing her eighteenth year she graduated, and six months afterwards married Major Victor Maurin, then a young merchant of Donaldsonville. Major Maurin, at the head of the Donaldsonville Artillery, left for the war in September, 1861, leaving his young wife and children in Donladsonville. The family remained here until the bombardment of the town by the federal fleet. With her children Mrs. Maurin made her home during the war with her sister and brother-in-law at "Ville de Bois," in Assumption. The heroism, self-sacrifice, and devotion to duty of Mrs. Maurin in those trying days is a part of the tradition of the country. The family remained at "Ville de Bois" during the four long years of war. Upon the return of Major Maurin in August, 1865, and after the old home had been rebuilt, they returned to Donaldsonville. Deceased had resided here for sixty-five years. The surviving children are Edmund and Charles Maurin and Mrs. J.N. Colomb. The grandchildren: Mrs. Lyllian Breckinridge and Mrs. C.E. Coates, of Baton Rouge; Mrs. John F. Slattery, Shreveport; Nolan and Garnet Maurin, New Orleans; Aimee,Jeanne, Charles, Jr., Henry, George and Leona Maurin, Donaldsonville. Funeral services were held at Ascension church Sunday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock, interment following in the Catholic cemetery. Rev. C.M. Chambon conducted the impressive obsequies, and a host of friends accompanied the remains to their last resting place and testified to the grief imposed upon the community by the passing away of this respected resident. To the bereaved family profound sympathy is extended.
