Mrs. Maurin had been ill for several days with an attack of the prevalent grippe, and although every remedy known to medical science was employed to conquor (sic) the painful malady the advanced age of the patient rendered the fight a hopeless one and the Angel of Death finally emerged victorious from the unequal contest. Mrs. Maurin was the widow of "Uncle Bob" Maurin, a pioneer sugar planter of the state, and was born on what is now the site of Belle Alliance plantation, then owned by her father, Dr. Don Juan Vives, a surgeon in the service of Spain during colonial days. She was gifted with an unusual charm of manner and a charitable and generous disposition, and because of these virtues was held in the highest esteem and respect by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. The funeral took place Tuesday, with services and interment in the Donaldsonville Catholic church and cemetery, and was attended by a large concourse of relatives and friends. The size and character of the cortege which accompanied the remains of the venerable lady to their last resting place attested the high standing she enjoyed in the community in which she lived and wherever else she was known, and was a most notable tribute of respect and remembrance. Mrs. Maurin leaves a sister, Mrs. Victor Maurin, Sr., of this city, and four daughters, Mrs. Camille Alleman and Mrs. J.B. Sandlin of Assumption parish, Mrs. Paul Cire and Mrs. Joseph Dugas of Whitecastle. The warm heart of the community beats in sympathy with these afflicted ones in their sad bereavement.
