THE LAST ROLL.

Hon. Edmund McCollam - On April 12, 1920, at the residence, Ellendale, 
Terrebonne Parish, La., there passed from earth to the great beyond the soul of 
Hon. Edmund McCollam, a beloved relative, a true friend, a gallant soldier, a 
worthy and honored citizen, and an honest man.

Mr. McCollam was born in Ascension Parish on February 18, 1845, and at five 
years of age went with his father to the paternal estate, Ellendale, where he 
grew up amid surroundings customary on Southern plantations. When the flames of 
war burst forth he was a student at Centenary College, Louisiana. With its close 
came the enlistment of the entire body of students with commands raised near 
their homes. Edmund McCollam enlisted in a company of cavalry which became a 
part of Col. Albert Cage's regiment of Wirt Adams's famous brigade. With this 
command he did gallant service until the fall of Vicksburg, where he was taken 
prisoner. After being paroled he returned to his home until exchanged. He then 
became a member of the St. Mary Cannoneers, with which battery he served until 
the close of the war.

Taking a lively interest in the political welfare of his State, he was an active 
participant in the overthrow of the carpetbag misrule of the State, and as a 
member of the legislature for two terms he gave material aid to the 
administration of Governor Nicholls. He was a member of the Democratic State 
Central Committee for more than forty years, during which time he was for 
several terms Vice Chairman of that body. For forty years he was a member of the 
Democratic Parish Committee and a delegate to the convention which nominated 
Cleveland for President the first term.

At the time of his death he was Commander of Braxton Bragg Camp, No. 196, 
U.C.V., of Thibodeaux, La. With his passing there has gone from our midst a man 
universally loved and respected, whose place it will be difficult to fill. -
