McCulloh - Addresses of Eulogy Delivered and Resolutions Adopted. - Pursuant to an order issued by the court in accordance with a motion offered by Attorney Walter Lemann, the twenty- seventh judicial district court for the parish of Ascension convened in special session at 10 o'clock last Saturday forenoon, the 11th inst., for the purpose of paying a tribute of respect to the memory of the late R. McCulloh, formerly district attorney of the twenty-seventh judicial district and for many years one of the leading lawyers of this section of the state. Judge Paul Leche presided, and there was a full attendance of court officers and members of the bar. Eloquent addresses of eulogy were delivered by Messrs. Walter Lemann, Edmund Maurin and C. C. Weber, and the following resolutions were read and adopted: Richard McCall McCulloh, born in Donaldsonville, Louisiana, on February 17, 1858, departed this life on the first day of February, 1911, in the same spot and identical old home where he first saw the light of day. Son of United States Surveyor General William James McCulloh, he inherited a liking for the land laws with which his father was familiar; at an early age he moved to Virginia and, enrolling at the Virginia Military Institute, he graduated therefrom; in 1880 he graduated in law from the University of Louisiana. Taking up the active practice of law in the place of his birth, he continued actively in the pursuit of that profession until the end. Early in his career he took an interest in public work, and at various times during his active life held positions of trust and responsibility. Shortly after engaging in the practice of law, he was sworn in as deputy clerk of court of the parish of Ascension, and later came into full charge of the office of clerk, although retaining the title of deputy; then district attorney for the parishes of Ascension and St. James, a position which he filled with great credit to himself and to the complete satisfaction of the people he served; a member of the town council of Donaldsonville; notary public; attorney to assist the tax collector; president of the Democratic Parish Executive Committee; parish superintendent of public education; state senator representing the parishes of Ascension and St. James from 1908 until the time of his death; these are some of the public offices which he filled with ability. In 1898 when his country called to arms her sons, he was ready to respond, and by his fellow volunteers was selected as captain of the company. It is with deep regret that we chronicle the closing of this life of activity cut down in its very prime without the slightest warning, and with much yet to look forward to. A lawyer of marked ability; a student; a great lover of books; companionable and genial; ever ready to counsel and aid his associates; his loss is sincerely mourned by the members of the bar of the Twenty-Seventh Judicial District of the state of Louisiana. Therefore. Be it resolved, That in the passing of Dick McCulloh we have lost a true friend, a loyal colleague and associate; one whose ability as a pleader was fully recognized and established; a faithful servant of the public in the various offices of trust which he held. Be it further resolved, That the members of the bar do render this their tribute to the ability and character of the deceased, and that they will ever cherish the memory of the departed and hold him in affectionate regard for the many services rendered in our midst. Be it further resolved, That in yielding submission to the will of Him whose ways are beyond our finding out, we sincerely sympathize with the loving wife and devoted son, and to them we tender our heartfelt sympathy. be it further resolved, That in tribute to the worth and merit of our departed fellow member, Richard McCall McCulloh, these resolutions be inscribed upon the minutes of the Twenty-Seventh Judicial District Court for the parish of Ascension; that a copy of the same be published in the Donaldsonville Chief and Democrat, and that a copy be sent to the family. After the adoption of the resolutions, court adjourned as a mark of respect to the memory of Mr. McCulloh.
