[volume] (Donaldsonville, La.) 1871-current, April 13, 1918, Image 2 Former Ascensionite Dies Suddenly. - Louis Melancon, formerly of Smoke Bend, but for the past several years a resident of Avondale, died at his home there at 12:15 a. m. Wednesday as the result of a sudden attack of illness. He was in the employ of an oil company and had arisen as usual shortly before midnight to go to work, when he remarked to his wife that he felt unwell, complaining particulary (sic) of a severe pain in the chest. As he seemed to be suffering acutely one of his sons was aroused and hurriedly despatched (sic) for a doctor. It soon became evident that Mr. Melancon was desperately ill and another son was sent for the priest, but before either message could be responded to the sufferer expired. His body was brought to Donaldsonville Wenesday (sic) afternoon on T. & P. train No. 23 and was conveyed to the residence of Mr. Melancon's only sister, Mrs. Vileor Landry, in Smoke Bend, from whence the funeral took place Thursday forenoon at 10 o'clock. Services were held at the St. Francis of Assisium Church in Smoke Bend, Rev. Father Loots officiating, after which interment was made in the Doanldsonville Catholic cemetery. Mr. Melancon is survived by his wife and five children, namely: Miss Ada Melancon, of Gold Mine plantation, St. John parish; Henry A. Melancon, a member of the Washington Artillery; Leon, Aubert and Melanie Melancon. Their grief is shared by a number of other relatives and family connections in Ascension parish, as well as a wide circle of sorrowing friends and acquaintances.
