CRUSHED TO DEATH. - A terrible accident occurred on Mr. Jno. Reuss' Germania 
place, in the first ward, Thursday evening about 5 o'clock, by which an 
estimable young man, Mr. W. F. Orcutt, lost his life, and Mr. Reuss had a 
narrow escape from death. While repairs were being made to the sugar-house 
and a large beam was being raised into position, the timber fell, crushing 
Mr. Orcutt beneath it, injuring him so severely that he died next morning. 
Mr. Reuss was struck on the side of the face by the falling beam and knocked 
down, receiving a severe and painful contusion. Had he been standing three 
or four inches further forward under the beam, he would inevitably have met 
the same sad fate that befel Mr. Orcutt. The young man whose life was 
sacrificed by this unfortunate casualty was a most estimable gentleman, 
highly respected and beloved by all who knew him. He was employed as 
overseer on the plantation, and was an energetic and capable manager. What 
makes his untimely taking off the more lamentable is, that he was engaged to 
be married, the date of the happy event having been set for some time in 
October, and a neat little residence intended for the occupation of the 
young couple had just been completed. The remains of Mr. Orcutt were 
interred at Bayou Goula to-day. The Chief extends its heartfelt sympathies 
to the bereaved friends of the deceased.
