(Donaldsonville, La.) 1871 - current, October 07, 1916, Image 2 CAPT. PERKINS DIES SUDDENLY. Wounded Three Weeks Previously, Had Almost Recovered. Capt. O. J. Perkins, of the Standard Oil Company's towboat Paddock, who was shot in the abdomen the night of Sept. 13 by Melodia Clark, a negress formerly employed as cook on the boat, died at the Hotel Dieu in New Orleans Wednesday. Capt. Perkins had practically recovered from his wound and expected to leave the hospital in a few days. He expired suddenly while seated in an invalid chair. Heart disease is believed to have been the cause of his death. According to the statement made by Capt. Perkins at the time of the shooting, he had had (sic) trouble with the Clark woman, and had discharged her. She asked to be allowed to ride on the boat to Paincourtville, where she resided, and the request was granted. When Paincourtville was reached, Capt. Perkins went into the kitchen to see that the woman left the boat. She refused to go, and producing a 22-calibre rifle, fired at Capt. Perkins at point-blank range. The bullet entered his stomach and pierced the liver. When he reached New Orleans physicians pronounced his wound dangerous, but not necessarily fatal. He recovered rapidly, and his sudden death was a surprise to the attending physicians. Capt. Perkins was 49 years old and was a native of Iowa, where he leaves a mother, father and sister. The Clark woman is in jail at Napoleonville, having been arrested immediately after the shooting.
