ROCH. - We were deeply pained to learn, a few days ago, of the death of Mr. Roch, recently a resident of this town, who died of small pox in New Orleans on Saturday last. Mr. Roch kept store in Donaldsonville three or four years, first at the corner of Railroad Avenue and Claiborne street, later at the corner of Chetimaches and Attakapas streets, near the Court House, from which latter place he removed to the city about six months ago. He was an exemplary citizen, a devoted husband and father and a faithful friend. A wife and eight little children, the youngest only twenty-five days old, are left to lament his loss and to meet the trials of life without the assistance of his guiding and protecting hand. All of our readers who knew the deceased will unite with us in an expression of regret for his untimely death and of sympathy for the widow and orphans he has left behind him. He was a member of Donaldsonville Lodge No. 2639, Knights of Honor, and we believe, of one of the other secret orders - perchance the Mason or Odd Fellows. source: The Donaldsonville Chief. The undersigned, on behalf of herself and children, returns her sincere and grateful thanks to the officers and members of Donaldsonville Lodge No. 2639, Knights of Honor, who have shown her so much kindness and rendered such efficient service in securing the prompt payment of the $2000 due on the beneficiary certificate oh her late husband, A. Roch, who was a member of Donaldsonville Lodge. To Mr. R. M. McCulloh, the accomplished Reporter of the Lodge and Deputy Clerk of Court, I am especially thankful, for to his skill and kindly offices was largely due the speedy and correct adjustment of the preliminaries essential to the payment of the certificate. The courtesy and kindness of my late husband's friends and brethren will ever be remembered with deepest gratitude by his widow and surviving children. FRANCES ROCH. source: The Donaldsonville Chief. (Donaldsonville, La.) 1871-current, November 03, 1883, Image 3 Mrs. Frances Roch, widow of the late A. Roch, Esq., formerly a resident of Donaldsonville, came up from Carrollton on Wednesday, accompanied by her father, Mr. William Mayo, for the purpose of qualifying as tutrix (sic) of her minor children and receiving the draft of $2000 in payment of the beneficiary certificate held by her husband as a member of Donaldsonville lodge No. 2639, Knights of Honor. Mr. R. M. McCulloh, the efficient Deputy Clerk of Court, who is also Reporter of the lodge just named, promptly prepared the necessary papers, and on Thursday morning all the requisite formalities were perfected and the draft delivered to Mrs. Roch. The firm of M. Israel & Co. kindly assumed its collection and advanced a portion of the amount to the holder, enabling Mrs. Roch and her father to return home on Thursday. Since her departure from Donaldsonville last March, Mrs. Roch has not only sustained the loss of her estimable husband by small pox, but her three youngest children died from the same disease. She and three of the five remaining children also had the disease, but fortunately recovered. The friends of the afflicted widow in this town have learned of her terrible misfortunes with deepest regret, and she has the heartfelt sympathy of all who know her.
