Matthias Rodriguez, the oldest resident of Brusly Sacremento, and one of the most venerable citizens of the parish, died at his home in the Brusly settlement at 1 o'clock a.m. Tuesday, aged eighty-seven years, ten months and eleven days. Despite his advance age Mr. Rodriguez had been in good health up to a short while ago, and his many friends and acquaintances throughout the parish were shocked to learn of his demise. He was born in Ascension parish, and had resided all his life in Brusly Sacremento, where he cultivated a tract of land. He represented the second ward in the policy jury many years ago, and also served as a member of the parish school board, relinquishing the latter position in 1908. His remains were brought to Donaldsonville Wednesday morning and interred in the local Catholic cemetery, after services at the St. Francis of Assisium Catholic church in Smoke Bend. Deceased had been married twice but was a widower at the time of his death. He is survived by two sons and five daughters, namely: Antoine Rodriguez, of Brusly Sacremento, a well-known sugar boiler; Matthias Rodriguez, Jr., a farmer residing back of Whitecastle; Mrs. Peter Coullot, Mrs. Gustave Lallande, Mrs. Adam Dugas and Miss Rosalie Rodriguez, all of Brusly Sacremento, and Mrs. Dennis Gomez, of Amesville. Mr. Rodriguez was an upright conscientious and hard-working man, and throughout his long and honorable career enjoyed in highest measure the esteem and admiration of his friends and neighbors, and the respect and confidence of all with whom he had business dealings. His death is mourned by a wide circle of friends and acquaintances, who unite the extending sincere sympathy to the bereaved family.
