(Donaldsonville, La.) 1871-current, November 04, 1882, page 3 Early in the morning of October 30 a young white wan (sic) who spent the night on the gallery of Martin's coffee-house, corner of Railroad Avenue and Conway street in this town, was discovered by a neighbor to be in a dying condition. Assistance was summoned, but the unfortnuate (sic) man was beyond human aid and breathed his last. The Coroner was sent for, viewed the remains, and found that the man had died from dysentery and exposure. Inquiry revealed the fact that the poor fellow was W.L. Smith, a native of Indiana, aged 26 years, who had been in the employ of Robinson's New Orleans Lightning Rod Company. He was a young man of dissipated habits and his untimely end was evidently hastened by the inordinate use of liquor. Coroner Vandegriff telegraphed news of the death to the father of deceased at Seymour, Indiana, and received a response directing that the young man's effects be sold to defray the expenses of his burial. As there were no effects to be found, the Coroner had the remains interred in the Protestant cemetery at public expense.
