Alfred St. Martin, son of L. Michel St. Martin, the popular and efficient manager of McCall & Legendre's McManor plantation in upper Ascension, was drowned in the Mississippi river at a point near Bougere Landing, just above the mouth of the Red River, about 10 o'clock last Sunday morning, as a result of a deplorable accident. It seems that young St. Martin and another member of the construction force which is engaged in building a trestle for the Texas and Pacific Railroad near Bougere Landing, were at work re-fastening a number of logs that had slipped their moorings and were drifted away, when in some manner the pirogue they occupied was overturned, precipitating both of the occupants into the water. Mr. St. Martin, being unable to swim, sank before assistance could reach him, but his companion succeeded in keeping afloat and was rescued. The body of the unfortunate young man was recovered about 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon, and, after being prepared for burial, was conveyed to Torras, where it was met by Capt. M.F. Bradford, of Port Barrow, a close friend of the St. Martin family, who went up to Torras Sunday night to take charge of the remains. The funeral occurred Monday afternoon upon the arrival of the south-bound train over the Texas and Pacific Railroad, and was attended by a large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends, interment being made in the local Catholic cemetery after impressive services at the Church of the Sacred Heart. Young St. Martin was twenty-three years of age, and was highly esteemed by all who knew him. The sad accident which ended his life is deeply regretted by his numerous friends in this community and else where, all of whom join The Chief in extending heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved father and other relatives. source: The Donaldsonville Chief.
