(Donaldsonville, La.) 1871-current, December 10, 1910, page 4 A Distressing Accident. - A most deplorable accident occurred at the Miles Company's Houmas Central factory at Burnside last Saturday evening, resulting in the fatal injury of Dudley Stuckey, the 17-year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Thos. H. Stuckey of Burnside, who was employed in the mill as a greaser. It seems that after quitting work at about 5:30 o'clock, young Stuckey went to the boiler room to wash up preparatory to leaving the factory for supper. He had performed his ablutions and was putting on his coat, when the tail of the garment became entangled in the rapidly moving belt of the blow-up engine. In a twinkling the unfortunate boy was swept off his feet and drawn into the machinery, his body being carried around with lightning-like rapidity a number of times before the engine could be brought to a stop. Besides being internally injured, the young man's right arm was severed just below the shoulder. Notwithstanding the fearful nature of his injuries, the sufferer retained consciousness and was enabled to recognize and speak to those about him. He was tenderly picked up and carried to the boarding-house, where everything possible was done to relieve his suffering and make his last moments comfortable, it being seen from the first that his injuries were of too serious a nature to permit hope for his recovery. After lingering for about five hours the unfortunate young man passed away, surrounded by his mother and other relatives who had been hastily summoned to his bedside. The remains were laid to rest in the Live Oak cemetery at Prairieville at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon, Rev. Smith, of Gonzales, officiating. A large number of relatives and friends assembled to pay a tribute of respect to the memory of the deceased youth, and a pall of gloom was cast over the entire community by his untimely and tragic demise. Besides his father and mother, young Stuckey is survived by three sisters, Mr. J.V. Hebert of Duplessis and Misses Belva and Anna Stuckey, and two brothers, Clifford Stuckey of Hobart and Perry Stuckey. The Chief begs leave to tender heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family in their great grief.
