(Donaldsonville, La.) 1871 - current, November 08, 1919, Image 5 Death of a Noble Woman. - It is with deep and sincere regret that the Chief chronicles this week the death of Mrs. J. Emile St. Martin, one of Ascension's most noble and charitable woman, who passed away at her home on Pelico plantation, in the first ward of the parish, last Saturday night at 10:45 o'clock. Of a robust constitution, always vigorous, active and energetic, her unexpected death was a profound shock to her many friends and acquaintances and has cast a deep gloom over the entire community. About six weeks ago, she was attacked by a sore on her back, which developed into a carbunckle, causing her much suffering and worry. Under proper medical care and attention, the sore dissappeared and she recovered and was rapidly regaining her strength and vigor when, about two weeks ago, she pricked her finger with a thorn in her flower garden. The wound was slight and she paid no attention to it at the time, but on the following day the finger began to swell and to cause her intense pain. Blood poison set in and despite everything that medical science could suggest and fond and tender nursing could do, she grew gradually worse until the end came. The funeral took place last Sunday evening at 4 o'clock. Services were held at the Catholic church here, after which the remains were consigned to their last resting place in the family tomb in the Catholic cemetery. The funeral was one of the largest ever held in this city, which attested the esteem in which the decedent was held. Mrs. St. Martin was the widow of the late Col. J. Emile St. Martin, who for years was a member of the police jury from the first ward and one of the most prominent and highly respected citizens and planters of the parish, and was 66 years and 9 months of age at the time of her demise. She was a gentle and noble-hearted woman, with a very charitable disposition and many are the poor of her neighberhood who at different times were beneficiaries of her charities, and who will miss her now that she is gone. She was a staunch, and pious Catholic and very faithful in the performance of her religious duties and in the fulfillment of her religious obligations. Her death will prove a great loss to the parish and especially to the community in which she lived all of her life and in which she was so well known, esteemed and loved. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Sam. Landry, who resides on the Pelico plantation, and by several nephews and neices.
