Webre. - On the 13th of July at his home in the city of New Orleans, Edward C. Webre died after an illness of six months, and from the Times-Picayune the following brief sketch of the career of this prominent St. James planter and New Orleans sugar broker is copied: Mr. Webre was born in Vacherie, St. James parish, forty-three years ago, and had been a resident of this city twenty-five years. He was a graduate of Jefferson College, of the Louisiana Experimental Station Sugar Chemistry School, and a few years ago of the New Orleans College of Pharmacy. When a young man, he engaged in the sugar business, and was known to practically every sugar planter in Louisiana. About 8 years ago Mr. Webre discovered a bleach for molasses, and it was used successfully by Louisiana planters until the outbreak of the European war. The chemical used in the bleach was imported from Germany, and when war started he was unable to get the chemical. He was a member of the Sugar Exchange and a leading figure in the sugar industry of the South. Until his health failed six months ago Mr. Webre was a member of most of the Carnival organizations. At the time of his death he was a member of the Louisiana, Chess, Checkers and Whist Clubs and of the Elks and Maccabees. He was married some years ago to Miss Mary F. Ellwood, who survives him.
