Bourg, who was a native of and died in Assumption parish. He was of French descent. St. Vincent plantation was a swampy wilderness at the time of the settlement of the Bourg family; but it is now in fine order for agricultural purposes, which admirable state of affairs has been brought about by their industry and perseverance in the face of many difficulties, which would have daunted many men. The father of Claiborne Bourg was a merchant, and was a very successful financier, a large amount of the money which he obtained being spent in purchasing land. He was active in the political affairs of his day, and besides being a member of the police jury and, parish treasurer he was also a member of the state legislature from Assumption parish, and while a member of that body did distinguished service. He died in 1849, when about forty-five years of age. His widow, whose maiden name was Heloise Folse, is now in her seventy-second year. She became the mother of nine children, of whom the subject of this sketch was the youngest. Only three members of this family are now living. Dr. E. U. Bourg practices his profession in this parish, Mrs. E. A. Whitaker also residing here with her mother, and the subject of this sketch. Claiborne Bourg spent his youthful days in this parish, where be also acquired his rudimentary literary education. After the war he began planting on St. Vincent plantation, and by persevering industry now has the whole plantation under cultivation. It is within one mile of Napoleonville, and its shipping facilities are thus good. In 1882 Mr. Bourg married Miss Viola Mestemaker, of New Orleans, and they are members of the Episcopal church. He is a democrat. From Biographical and Historical Memoires of Louisiana, volume 2, pp. 309-310. Submitted by Mike Miller
