Monier, Assumption Parish, Louisiana Col. Henry D. Monier, deputy tax collector of Third and Fifth districts of New Orleans, La., was born in Assumption parish, La., October 23, 1836, and is the son of J. B. Monier, a school teacher of that parish. Later the father moved to New Orleans and resided here until the breaking out of the war, when he took his family to Mexico and died there. He was a native of Beaucaire, France, and came to the United States about 1822 or 1823. His son, Henry D. Monier, received his education in the city schools and when yet a young boy opened up a notion and variety store in New Orleans, later entered the levee or sugar gauger business in which he remained until 1859. That year he entered the sheriff's office under Thomas Parker, and remained there until the breaking out of the war. He then enlisted in the Tenth Louisiana infantry, Company I, as second lieutenant and after the second battle of Manassas, became lieutenant-colonel of the regiment He surrendered at Appomattox with General Lee. This was the Army of Northern Virginia. He took part in the battle of Chancellorsville, where he was wounded, seven days' fight around Richmond, second battle of Bull Run, Sharpsburg, Harper's Ferry, Petersburg and many others. He was never taken prisoner. After the close of the war Colonel Monier returned to New Orleans and once more entered the sheriff's office. Later he was in the tax collector's office as clerk and deputy until the present time, performing his duties with much credit to himself and perfect satisfaction to all. Miss Le Bon, of New Orleans, became his wife in 1868, and this union was blessed by six children--four daughters living and a son, Patrick Henry, who died in infancy in 1878, and a daughter ------, who died in 1873.
