All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** **************** Sept 4th, 1874 In the matter of the Successions of Pamela Dugas deceased wife of Elphege Dugas and Elphege Dugas (also deceased) Proces Verbal of Sale State of Louisiana Parish of Assumption Be it known that on this Seventh day of the month of August in the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight hundred and seventy four and of the Independence of the United States of America the ninety- ninth. By virtue of and in obedience to an order of Sale to me directed by the Honorable the Parish Court of the Parish of Assumption, State of Louisiana, dated the Third day of the month of July, One thousand Eight hundred and seventy four (1874) lendered[?] in the matter of the above successions. I Edgar Pierre Hellum[?] Sheriff of the Parish of Assumption, aforesaid, repaired to the late residence of said deceased, situated in this Parish of Assumption, in the Bruly des Oliviers, in the Right Bank of Bayou Lafourche, for the purpose of making the sale at Auction of the property and effects belonging to said successions. Said Sale having been advertised for more than Thirty days in the official Journal of said Parish (The Assumption Chronicle). And then by cutting off from the first [word illegible] of said newspaper containing said advertisements, the said advertisement, And posting them at the door of the Court House of this Parish at the Parochial Church and at Paincourtville in this Parish. Before proceeding with said sale I announced in a loud and audible voice the terms and conditions of the Sale to be as follows; to wit: The landed[?] Property and moveables to be sold for Cash. Said landed[?] Property and moveables to be sold in the order in which they were appraised and hereinafter described [ start second page ] Before proceeding with said sale I also read in a loud and audible voice a Certificate of Mortgages from the Recorder of Mortgages of the parish dated the August 1874, which Certificate is hereunto annexed for reference. And then and there at the hour of 11 O'clock assisted by Messieurs William M. Marks and Frank R. Comeau competent witnesses, domiciliated [living] in this said Parish, proceeded with said sale in the manner following to wit: A certain tract of land situated in said Parish of Assumption in Bruly Oliviers, measuring Two arpents and ten trises[?] front by a depth of Fourten arpents, more or less, bounded in the East side by the land of E.F.Xavier Dugas, on the west side by that of Severin Blanchard, on the North side by the Pierre Part Road, separating it from the land of Herbert Simoneaux and on the South side by the land of Jeseph Mollero, with all the buildings and improvements thereon. Said Tract of land belonging to the Succession of Pamela Dugas sold and adjudicated to the minor children, in said succession, Ferdinand, Thomas and Marguerite Dugas by and through their Tutor Achille Dugas, they being the highest and last bidders for the price and [word illegible] of Eight hundred Dollars. $800.00 signed Achille Dugas [illegible signature] A certain tract of land also situated in said Parish of Assumption, in Bruly Oliviers, measuring one and a half arpents front by Fourteen arpents in depth more or less, bounded North by the Public road which separates it from the land of Henry Leglen[?], South by the Highland plantation (belonging to the succession of James Pugh) East by the land of Jerome and Theophile Dugas and west by the lands of [ end of second page, no other pages given to me ] NOTES: A copy of this succession document was obtained by my aunt from the Assumption parish court house in about 1990. I was sent only the first two pages of the document, so that is all that is transcribed here. My notes are enclosed in braces []. At the time this document was written in 1874, Elphege would have been 30 years old and Pamela would have been 29. They were married in 1867, seven years prior to this document. Their surviving children were: Jean Ferdinand Dugas, age 7 Thomas Dugas, age 4 Marguerite Dugas, age 2 Achille Dugas, mentioned in the document, would have been Pamela's father. He would have been 67 years old. His first wife, Marie Farelie LeBlanc, the mother of Pamela, had died 29 years ago. He had been married to Ozite Mollere for 27 years. Pamela had 8 brothers and sisters. The children stayed with Achille and Ozite at least 6 more years. The 1880 census shows them living with Achille and "Ausite". Later they lived with Christoper C.
